Handwashingforlife Hands-On System
Submitted by Larry Jackson on May 9, 2010 - 4:27pm.A 5 STEP program implemented in 3 STAGES The Hands-On® system delivers greater compliance in hand hygiene behavior in health care environments. It was developed to establish and achieve standards of performance consistent with reducing the risk for Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI). The system generates the behaviors needed, namely best practice hand hygiene interventions, that translate into better management control, better staff compliance and; most importantly, safer employees, safer environments and safer patients.
The 5 Steps:
- Understand Risk: The risk for HAI is facility and culture dependent. Our risk assessment tools helps Infection Prevention managers determine the readiness of their organizations culture to internalize behavior change program. Tell me more...
- Establish Standards: Setting expectations at individual, team and organization level is critical step in behavior change process. Measurable goals for hand & surface hygiene quality and compliance is the first step.
- Optimize Facility: Insuring conditions for success are in place for behavior modification. If conditions are not right behavior change is not sustainable. Tell me more...
- Train & Motivate: We advocate a variety of Best Practice tactics & techniques that will internalize best practice behavior at individual and team level. Tell me more....
- Monitor: Tracking performance insures standards for quality & frequency of hand & surface hygiene are met and maintained. What gets measured, gets done. Tell me more....
The 3 Stages of Implementation
Submitted by Larry Jackson on May 9, 2010 - 4:38pm.
1. Readiness Assessment: In the first stage of implementation the ability of a health care facility, its management and caregivers to successfully implement the full program is assessed with the use of behavioral, facility and unit surveys. Actions identified during stage 1 address shortfalls in process, design, equipment and supplies. Handwashingforlife facilitators support Infection Prevention managers in developing an action plan specific to their needs.
2. Set Conditions for Success: In stage 2 Handwashingforlife can assist management in establishing the core conditions for success. Minimum standards for management and facility readiness insure a successful change process.
3. Change Behavior: In stage 3 the hand & surface hygiene behavior change plan developed in stage 1 is implemented. Handwashingforlife can assist with implementation where deemed appropriate by IP management. Proven behavior change techniques are followed by compliance monitoring. Behaviour reinforcement actions are integrated into the plan. Tell me more
